August 14 “
When our perils are past, shall our gratitude sleep?
No,—here’s to the pilot that weathered the storm!” GEORGE CANNING
Visiting hours are over, but one woman remains at her husband’s bedside in the ward. We can’t make out what she is saying, but we can hear the soothing tone of her voice and we can almost feel the reassuring touch of her hand. At that moment we begin thinking about all the people in our lives, over the years and to this day, who have been comforting, encouraging, loving, and selfless. A wave of gratitude sweeps through us as we remember these special people. There were those who refused to give up on us when, as young adults, we got into serious trouble. There was the mother, the father, the sister, the dear friend who helped us regain a sense of self-worth. And there are the treasured friends and relatives who, last week, yesterday, and just several hours ago smoothed the bed sheets, brushed our hair, and assuaged our fears. As night falls we thank God for these special people. In our prayers we let Him know that we deeply appreciate who they are and how they have come to us, and especially the fact that each bears witness of His abiding love for every one of His children.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
In my life, God works through people.
